A
20.5 acre site on the banks of the Missouri River known as
Miller's Landing will soon be turned over to the City of Omaha.
The property was originally donated to Douglas County in 1994 by
the Miller family in memory of Ed Miller Sr.
In an agreement recently approved by the Omaha City Council, the
county will transfer the land to the city. The property will then
be converted into a public park with trails, trees and a small
lake. The county will pay the city $2.4 million to develop the
property. The city, in return, will transfer five acres located
at the south end of the park to the federal government to
construct a new National Park Service regional office. The county
will then take over the existing National Park Service building
at 17th and Jackson Streets. The city has also agreed to make
about $400,000 worth of street repairs in that area.
The park will be named Miller's Landing Park and the city said
they will continue to honor the agreement the county has with the
owners of the River City Star who currently lease a portion of
the property. Money to develop the park will come from the
county's share of state lodging taxes. The Papio
Missouri River Natural Resources District is
also contributing $1 million. Construction on the park should
begin by late next summer with a planned completion date to be
sometime in the fall of 2003.
