A new group called the Washington
County Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee has
recently been formed to raise awareness of the upcoming 200th
anniversary of the 1804-06 Corps
of Discovery expedition.
The committee, which was organized in April, includes Dan Hunt
of Blair, NE who is serving as chairman. Morley and David
Genoways, board chairmen of the Washington
County Historical Association,
are serving as vice chairmen. They hope to set up Lewis and
Clark celebrations over the next three years and encourage
schools to emphasize the Corps
of Discovery in their classes.
Along with gaining support from Washington County and its cities
and villages, the group will be very involved in helping to plan
the Fort Atkinson signature event. The U.S. Army built Fort
Atkinson, now a state historical park, where Capts. Meriweather
Lewis and William Clark held their first council with Indian
tribes on August 3, 1804. The event is planned for July 31 -
August 3, 2004.
Re-enactments of the Indian council are expected to be part of
the Fort Atkinson event, which begins a day after the scheduled
opening of the Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark
Interpretive Trail and Visitor Center at Nebraska City.
Washington County residents who want to be part of the county's Lewis
and Clark Bicentennial Committee should
call the Washington
County Historical Association
