Council Bluffs City Council unanimously approved the transfer of
$1.5 million in state funds this week to Omaha to help in the
construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River.
The grant money came from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
The
3,000-foot bridge will eventually connect Omaha's new riverfront
park to Council Bluffs. Total cost for the project is estimated at
around $20 million. The Council Bluffs funds along with other grant
money will go towards the design work, engineering and construction
of the bridge.
The Papio-Missouri
River Natural Resources District is providing $1 million for
maintenance after the pedestrian bridge is built. Construction is
expected to begin sometime next year with a completion date of late
2004. |

| In
a related story, the Keystone
Trail which will eventually wind its way down to the
riverfront, is being expanded in northwest Omaha.
The owners of Frontier Plaza, northwest of Crown Point Avenue
and Wenninghoff Road, along with the owners of Double D Properties
have agreed to construct two new segments of the trail that will
eventually end up at the Lake
Cunningham Recreation Area. Each of the two new segments is
expected to cost about $30,000.
These trail segments are an important link that will help
complete the 31/2 miles of the recreation trail from Fort Street to
Lake Cunningham .

The Keystone
Trail is a flat paved Trail that follows the Papio Creek from
Democracy Park (89th and Fort St.) to
Haworth Park in Olde Town Bellevue.
The trail was completed on the summer of 1999 and is about 27
miles long. Its
intended use is cycling, walking, running,
and rollerblading.
There are several parks with playgrounds along the way for the
kids. There are
many places to park and get on the trail
including:
