Impact of proposed changes to the
Missouri River

The Army Corps of
Engineers is currently reviewing a number of options regarding the
way the Missouri River's flow is managed. Under consideration are
options that reduce summer flows and increase spring and fall flows
from Gavin's Point Dam in Yankton, South Dakota. These proposed
changes would have severe economic, environmental, and recreational
impacts on Siouxland.
The purported benefits of the proposed changes, providing habitat
for two species of birds and an artificial spawning cue for the
pallid sturgeon, are scientifically questionable and extremely
minimal (only 40 acres of plover and tern habitat created below
Gavin's Point Dam). Yet the costs are tremendous and are all borne
by those of us who live downstream.

Send a letter to your senators and congressmen to tell them that
the Corps of Engineers should operate under the Current Water
Control Plan until an alternative is found that equitably meets the
needs of all stakeholders. The web site is set up to quickly and
easily send an email message to your elected officials in
Washington. The time it will take is minimal and the message is
extremely important.
