or the first time since 1996, Cottonwood Marina in Blair, Nebraska will be host to an event that drew nearly 2,500 spectators the last time it was held. The 2002 'Missouri River Shootout' boat races will be held on Saturday, September 21st. starting at 10am.

An article that appeared in the September 19, 1995 issue of the Pilot-Tribune stated that fifty some boats entered the 'best of time' competition that year. Although these type of races are

common at such places as Lake of the Ozarks, spectators usually don't have the type of view you can get from the river bank because the event is held further out in the lake.

It takes a lot of coordination to put on an event such as this, including getting permission from the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard Auxiliary members will be on station with orders to help keep other boat traffic away from the half-mile course where participants will be racing.

Competitors use this half-mile to build up speed then pass through a radar trap where their top speed is recorded. The radar gun will be positioned high in front of the marina, therefore all spectators will have quite a view of  Top Gun participants as they full-throttle their way past the finish line.

Comments from Readers

We had a great time at the last Top Gun event at Cottonwood Marina, and this year looks to be bigger and better than ever. Racing at speed on the Missouri river is always a challenge for even the best boat drivers, and we love a good challenge. We will be bringing the APBA Factory 1 Active Thunder "One Vision" in hopes of defending our Top Gun title in our class,
and look forward to another great time at Cottonwood.
