ARTICLE 11/09/2002 - Omaha's Riverfront is inaugurated through opening of new restaurant

A new stretch of Abbott Drive opened last week, making major changes in your drive to both the airport and other riverfront attractions.

The newly opened Abbott Drive now merges with Cuming Street, making it the main east-west artery for getting to and from the airport from the south. The old Abbott Drive followed the river

before exiting near 10th and Capital Avenue. This portion of Abbott is now permanently closed to traffic.

The city has also opened two new Cuming Street intersections: 13th Street, a one-way heading north; and 14th Street, a one-way heading south. This makes these two streets the main routes when traveling between downtown and Eppley Airfield.

Eventually, another new intersection at 10th and Cuming Street will be opened. 10th Street will run both north and south. This street will run right past the new convention center and arena, making it the most direct route between downtown and the airport.

These changes have not only opened up an entire new gateway to the city, but also in how you reach various destinations. Some of these changes are:

If driving west from the airport on the new Abbott Drive -
  • To get to the North Freeway and Interstate 480 - head west on Cuming to 28th Street, turn left and cross Burt Street to the on-ramps.
  • Reach downtown and the Old Market by turning left from Cuming onto southbound 14th Street.
  • Reach Council Bluffs by turning left onto southbound 14th. Drive south to Chicago Street and take the eastbound I-480 on-ramp.

If driving from the west to the airport via the new Abbott Drive -

  • Exit the North Freeway and take Cuming Street east. This is now a two-way street.
  • Take I-480 west from Council Bluffs and exit at 14th Street. You must pass 14th Street, which is only southbound and take a right on 15th Street. Take 15th Street north to Cuming and turn right.
  • From downtown, drive north on 13th Street. Take a right on Cuming and go east to Eppley.

Remember....even if your destination is not the airport, these changes will also affect those of you traveling to such places as Sandpiper Cove Marina or the Anchor Inn. Another new street still under development is 6th Street. This street will eventually allow you direct access to all riverfront attractions, including the new Gallup University which is still under development.
