slips for boaters who would like to stop and enjoy the many riverfront amenities currently being built in this area.
According to Larry Foster, acting Omaha Parks and Recreation Director, construction of the first phase of this project should be completed later this summer.
Upon completion of the $1.5 million
marina basin, which is being funded by riverfront redevelopment bonds, the next step will be to acquire funding for the docks, walkway ramp, lighting and any electrical work needed.
Federal grants will be applied for to complete the project. Once the $300,000 to $400,000 of needed grant money is secured, proposals will be

requested from dock manufacturers and other contractors. It is hoped the entire project can be completed by next summer or early fall 2004.
Foster said the size of the dockage area is limited because of remediation issues associated with ASARCO and the location of the Burt/Izard sewer. The docks themselves will extend somewhere between 20 and 26 ft. and will be the floating double wide type similar to what is currently installed at Cottonwood Marina in Blair. The
opening to this area should fall somewhere between 50 - 60ft. across, allowing easy access for most boats.
Because the project is still in a preliminary stage, it has not been determined as to who will operate the marina. Private management is still being considered. There will definitely be a charge to dock your boat but the logistics have not been worked out yet. If it is determined that over-night stays

will be allowed, there will more than likely be some power outlets installed for shore-power.
Another riverfront attraction that is being considered is the use of a water taxi. Public bids will be taken to determine who will operate this business. The private water taxi service would carry visitors along the Missouri River to undetermined riverfront attractions or day cruises.
Once completed, the new dockage area will allow boaters to stop, have dinner and drinks, visit the new convention center/arena, or take in the unique ambiance that is expected to exist in this area.
