OmahaRiverFront.com - RIVER NEWS
Possible 'River Rest Area' may be developed

Attention Missouri River Boating Community:

We have been asked by the Harbor 671 Association to find out how much interest there would be in developing a ''RIVER REST AREA'  between Cottonwood Marina in Blair, NE and the Decatur Marina.

The proposed river rest area would be on the Nebraska side (right bank) of the river at the 671 mile marker on Lower Little Sioux Reach - across the river from Iowa's Deer Island state game management area. There is an existing chute in this area that would be widened and dredged to allow boat access. The nearest accessible town to the proposed rea is Tekamah in Burt County, Nebraska.

The proposal includes a floating boat dock and walkway up to an area that could include a picnic shelter, restroom and grills.

We would like to hear your comments and hopeful support of the Big Cottonwood Recreation and Habitat Improvement Project. Since grant money will be needed to complete this project, it will only be accomplished if there is support.

Please fill in comments submission form below and we will forward this on to the appropriate personnel. OmahaRiverFront.com - An On-Line Resource for River News, Information, Resources, Recreation and Travel

Comments from Readers

Sounds like a great idea. Especially if it is designed to allow access for the larger boats that use the river. - Ken Cratty

This sounds like a good idea to me although we don't usually go up river much past Cottonwood. - Cruiser

Any kind of boater related improvement on the river is a good thing. A rest area with facilities is an excellent idea! - Warren Sage

I agree, this is a great idea to have a rest area and picnic shelters at mile 671. We would use it and support it. This is my first year on the river and enjoy running north from Blair. Hope the area would be widened out and dredged to allow bigger boats access. - Lynn Suess

Outstanding idea. We stop at many sandbars during the course of the summer. Having a sheltered cove with rough facilities would be great. Nice to hear they are thinking about the boaters. - Steve Blanchard

Very good idea...Actually could use a number of them here and there...One closer to Omaha yet still north and one south of Omaha would be great too. - Scott McCaig

Yahoo!!! Sounds exciting! I know we will use it a lot more than a foot bridge crossing the river. Now this makes since. We would positively use it. It is a pretty long haul between Pop N Doc's and Cottonwood. Thank You! - Vicki Dorau

I agree people should think a little more south for a place like that. - Michelle

It's a good idea but with the uncertainty of future flows, is it a safe idea? - Ttime

We do need one, but it needs to be farther south closer to Omaha. - Lori

Excellent idea!! Agree with Warren, any boater related improvements on the river is a great thing. Also hope the area will handle the larger boats. Impressed so far with what's happening on the RiverFront. - Livin on H20

Great Idea! I would really enjoy a place to take a rest room break. - Bill
