May 7, 2003Omaha shows off new Riverfront ParkBy NANCY NEUROHRReplacing the heaps of scrap metal that once occupied this area are now neatly manicured lawns, a scenic walkway along the river and the newly constructed Rick's Cafe Boatyard, an upscale restaurant that offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The grand opening of the plaza was celebrated with various forms of entertainment including music, story-telling, boat rides on the River City Star and appearances by Peyton C. "Bud" Clark Jr., the great-great-great grandson of William Clark. Vendor booths aligned the plaza and members of the Cornhusker Corvette Club displayed their cars and invited the public to take a closer look. Also on hand was Gary Moulton, a professor of American history at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and well-known author of a 13-volume annotated edition of the Lewis and Clark journals. Visitors were also able to examine a version of the 40 ft. pirogue used by Lewis and Clark on their expedition up the Missouri River nearly 200 years ago. Many people enjoyed the day by having lunch and refreshments on the newly opened outside deck at Rick's. From this vantage point, you not only have a perfect view of the river but you can also enjoy watching the recreational boats as they make their way up and down the narrow channel. Soon there will be a new dockage area for boats and a pedestrian bridge that will span across the river to enjoy. The new convention center/arena just to the west will open later this year and Gallup University that is currently under construction north of the plaza is also nearing completion. Omaha
is going through a dramatic transformation in this area so if you
haven't visited the river lately, we suggest you come and see it
for yourself.
