The Second Annual Missouri River Shoot-Out at Cottonwood Marina

The '2nd Annual Bernie Balkus Memorial Missouri River Shoot-Out' was held on Saturday and Sunday, September 6th & 7th at the Cottonwood Marina in Blair, NE (river mile marker
The roaring riverfront 'flyby' of Bernie Balkas' Challenger, with 'ole glory colors flying, celebrates the commencement of the 2nd Annual Bernie Balkas Memorial Missouri River Shoot-Out. 651.5). This now yearly event was held in memory of Bernie Balkus who was tragically killed in a train accident just days before the shootout was held last year.

Participants are required to follow all safety procedures before racing down a mile course where their speed is then recorded by a radar gun.

This year's Top Gun award went to Jim Hamil from Sterling, CO who raced his Eliminator Cat at a speed of 130 mph. Congratulations Jim!

The following information was provided by Cottonwood Marina:

Sixty boats registered to participate in the two-day event. There were an estimated two thousand spectators each day including a Sunday count of about fifty-five boats beached up opposite the marina on the Iowa riverbank.
