non-profit group known as the Missouri River Relief (MRR) began a
754-mile journey down the Missouri River this week to map trash
deposits along the river. The information they gather will be
entered into a digital database that can be used to plan river
clean-ups.
The 'MegaScout' participants began their journey on
Sunday, July 16th at Ponca State Park, NE.
They are currently in
the Omaha area and will continue on to the Mississippi in St.
Louis, MO.The project involves two boats traveling downstream
scouting for trash deposits and old dumpsites. The information
they gather will be made available to the public and will be
useful to local organizations who would like to become involved in
keeping our river clean. The MRR began six years ago in Missouri
and has hosted Missouri River clean-ups and learning festivals
across the state. They decided to extend their reach north this
year to just above Sioux City, IA. The goal is to energize local
communities to join in their effort in restoring the Missouri
River and making it a more beautiful river for all to enjoy. The
first leg of this journey will end on or about Friday, July 28th
in Kansas City, MO (mile marker 365) with the continuation to St.
Louis to be completed later this summer or fall.
