bout
14 inches of snow over a heavy accumulation of ice on December 3rd
caused extensive damage to boats and docks in Lake of the Ozarks.
The
freak storm that hit the Ozarks last Friday caused the roofs in
many commercial marinas and residential docks to collapse,
trapping boats underneath them. In some cases, the entire dock
sank. Some structures just twisted up or flipped upside down from
the weight of the heavy snow.No portion of the lake was left
unscathed. The damage was widespread across the area. AmerenUE
(Missouri's Electric Utility Company) is in charge of assessing
the damage. From what they've seen so far, it looks like
commercial and older docks sustained the most damage. AmerenUE
is responsible for permitting structures on the water and requires
docks be built to their specifications by certified builders. Some
of the older docks that were damaged may have been built before
their requirements were in force. Although the extent of damage
is still unknown, repairs could extend well into the summer
boating season.
